Our Staff
Dan Young, Senior Pastor: Dan is a graduate of Biblical Seminary in Hatfield, PA and served a church in Doylestown, PA for over 27 years before coming to Salem. He and his wife, Emily have four grown children. Pastor Dan is passionate about teaching the Word, prayer, and leading the church.
Marie Reynolds, Early Childhood Coordinator: Marie grew up on a farm in Faribault, MN, and retains a love for the outdoors and nature. Her B.A. in Family and Child Development comes in handy In her "day job" as a preschool teacher and in her part-time work with the youngest members of the Salem community. In her free time, she enjoys scrapbooking, knitting, and stamping.
Jared Carlson, Senior High Pastor: Jared is from Eden Prairie, MN. He is a 2002 college graduate and recently graduated from seminary. He enjoys playing almost any sport. Jared and wife Renee recently celebrated their first anniversary.
Jason Carlson, Associate Pastor: Just like his brother Jared, Jason is from Eden Prairie, MN. He holds a M.A. in Christian Thought In addition to his work at Salem, Jason serves as an adjunct instructor at local Christian colleges, and he is a regular speaker at Christian conferences. Jason enjoys working out and is our resident world traveler; he's been to 29 countries on six continents.
Phil Dahlof, Junior High Pastor: Phil enjoys the vivacity and enthusiasm of junior high students and in about 11 years will have two junior highers of his own; he and his wife, Meghan, have two sons. Phil graduated from college in 2002, and is currently enrolled at Bethel Seminary. He reports that he has "two crooked toes."
Paula Johnson, Children's Ministry Assistant: Paula lives in Fridley with husband Kevin and three young sons. With a B.A. in Family & Child Development, she formerly served full-time on Salem's staff directing kids' ministry. Now she joyfully serves as a full-time mom, and also enjoys getting out of the house a bit to help where needed at Salem. Her keen ability to hear the sound of M&M's pouring from miles away will amaze you!
Dennis Port, Traditional Worship Leader: Dennis is Director of Choral Activities at Bethel University, where he directs the Male Chorus, Festival Choir, Chamber Choirs, and Bethel Choir. He lives in Shoreview with his wife Nola and has two daughters and four grandsons. Dennis started the Salem choir in the family room of Phil and Ardy Carlson in 1964 and has now come “full circle.” He also directs an adult chorale, Evangelion, which travels to Ukraine every two years in a classical music ministry.
Mark Watkins, Associate Pastor: Mark is a Bethel Seminary graduate and served as pastor of two other churches in Minnesota before coming to Salem. He and his wife, Vera, have three grown sons. Pastor Mark is eager to encourage all who wish to know Jesus Christ and grow in their relationship to Him.
Nils Friberg, Pastor of Care: Nils grew up in Oregon. He has two grown children and greatly enjoys his grandchildren. Although he is officially a retired Bethel Seminary professor, Nils remains an active teacher. His heart for people experiencing crisis is evident in his work as a Ramsey County chaplain and in his mediation work for various Christian organizations. Call him with any of your special needs.
Casey Osell, Administrative Assistant: Although Casey is a small-town girl from Spooner, WI, she has adapted to the big-city ways of the Twin Cities. She has a B.A. in business and is very organized, but tolerates chaos well. Casey and her husband, Kevin, enjoy being outdoors and spending time with friends and family. They don't mind ice cream either.
Amy Fisher, Communications Coordinator: Amy grew up in South Florida, but enjoys Minnesota winters, except in April and May. Despite her B.A. in math, she likes writing. Amy's whole family (husband Barrett and two college-age children), thinks that puffins are the cutest birds ever.
Kathy Pals: Office Assistant. Kathy grew up in Ida Grove, Iowa and after 28 years in Minnesota, finally claims to be from Minnesota. She has a B.S. in psychology, which has given her necessary resources to draw from as she raises four children and works as a church staff member. Chocolate is usually available as a bribe to stop by her desk.
Ron Carlson, Facility Manager: Ron and his identical twin brother, Rich, spent their Minneapolis childhood deliberately confusing people. Ron has used his building skills in ministry at both Trout Lake Camp and in the Ukraine. He and his wife, Mary Lynn, have three adult daughters and five grandchildren.
